The Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region is a UNESCO registered organisation that deals with the balance between the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. The process and application for registration was a 4 -5 year process and involved comprehensive analysis, scoping, consultation, community cohesion, interactive workshops and the completion of a detailed application form to be submitted to UNESCO on behalf of National Dept of Enviro Affairs
Debby Thomson and Bushveld Connections was an integral part of the project management team involved in obtaining official registration for the central lowveld region with UNESCO as an officially registered Biosphere Reserve/ Region within UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme.
The project was initiated in 1996 and culminated in official registration occurring in Sept/ Oct 2001.
During the time, extensive consultation and public participation processes were undertaken
as well as in depth research and situational studies with grass routes, private sector
and the various government sector role players
The final registration process involved the completion of a detailed and comprehensive application document outlining details on all related aspects within the region. This is then submitted to provincial government for their input and approval. Once provincial government has given their approval, the application form goes through several different levels and sectors within National Government for their input and approval and once finally achieved at National Government level, the document is then considered a National Document and is sent to UNESCO in Paris from the minister of Environmental Affairs for final registration.
After receiving notification from UNESCO in Sept/ Oct 2001 that successful registration of the region had been achieved, Debby Thomson and Bushveld Connections have continued to play an integral part in the development, management of the organisation as a whole and have managed to get the organisation and its principles institutionalised in various levels of government within the region as well as implemented in many of the ethics and principles of private development within the region.
After manys years of commitment and support of K2C, Debby is now also currently sitting on the board and assisting with policy and strategy implementation
