One of the core focus areas of a biosphere reserve is Sustainable Development. With this in mind, the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere realised the need to develop a detailed guidelines document with suitable recommendations and options for various levels of development in each of the 3 Biosphere zones.
Bushveld Connections in conjunction with Environmental Consultancy Services - Biovista - were awarded the contract to develop a detailed “Development Guidelines” document for general use and distribution within K2C.
The process undertaken involved desktop studies on various options/ strategies available followed by a number of public participation processes with developers, builders and residents in the region.
Through the consultative processes undertaken during the public participation processes and fully inclusive and cohesive set of guidelines was developed.
The guidelines take each identified aspect and sector related to development and resource use and list out the varying options and differences to be undertaken in each of the zones (ie Core, buffer and transition zones, which by their definition and registration require different levels of development and environmental impact allowed).
The document was then laid out graphically and a handy document was printed and has subsequently been distributed throughout the region on regular occasions.
After the completion of the printed document, the concept and the principles involved were then taken to each of the local municipalities in the K2C region where extensive and detailed workshops were done with each of the municipal planning departments as well as ward councillors in each municipality.
The workshops focused on firstly, who and what is the K2C, what are the 3 zones and why they need different levels of development and what are the development criteria for each of these zones.
The completed documents were then left with the municipalities for general distribution.
