The Voluntary Carbon Off-set Initiative - known as K2C Carbon is a project that come out as a direct result of the development of the Bio-cultural Protocol project with the Traditional Health Practitioners of Bushbuckridge
Debby Thomson and Bushveld Connections were once again awarded the contract to project management the initial phase for the development of a voluntary Carbon Off-set initiative, known as K2C Carbon. This is being funded through UNESCO Germany and is scheduled to be completed in April 2012.
The core concept will be to establish a process, institutional arrangements and a credible registry to enable the transactions for the buying and selling of carbon credits.
The principle behind this concept will be that the discerning guest visiting the region and staying in one of the many lodges in the K2C region will be able to voluntarily off-est the carbon produced during their stay in the region by contributing towards the fund. This fund will be processed through a credible carbon registry and the monies will then be implemented directly into a project in the local area that will focus on an allow for credible and measurable carbon sequestration.
A number of small pilot projects are being investigated and the most applicable will be selected. This project will be used to measure and quantify the specific carbon sequestration in our region. Additionally, it will be used to test out new theories and details in a process called Agro-forestry - developed to increase the sequestration of carbon, while simultaneously increasing the benefit to people
The data obtained through the initial functioning and data collection of the pilot project, will then be used to develop and implement a large scale development involving agroforestry together with the planting and supply of medicinal plants currently unavailable to the Traditional Health Practitioners of Bushbuckridge as outlined in the process undertaken during the development of the Bio-cultural Protocol.
This phase of the project will not involve full implementation just yet, but will be to oversee the leverage and planning aspects required inorder to be able to achieve full implementation, this includes all necessary business plans, legal agreements and outlines as well as the drawing up and establishment of funding proposals required .
Guests make voluntary contributions based on number of nights stayed in K2C region.
Funds are then processed through credible registry
Funds acquired through registry are then applied to local development projects which allows for sufficient carbon sequestration to off-set carbon sales
